AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR (AED) TRAINING COURSE

First Aid Scotland Automated External Defibrillator

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is a leading cause of death in Europe, affecting about 700,000 individuals every year. Many victims of SCA can survive if bystanders act immediately while ventricular fibrillation (VF) is still present, but successful resuscitation is unlikely once heart rhythm stops completely (asystole). The optimum treatment for VF cardiac arrest is immediate bystander Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) plus electrical defibrillation. Defibrillation is, in fact, the only treatment proven to restore a normal heart rhythm from VF. When used on a victim suffering from  Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA), an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can be used to administer a lifesaving electric shock that may restore the heart’s rhythm to normal. First Aid Scotland AEDs are designed to allow non-medical personnel to use these defibrillators to help save lives.

Voltage stored by the defibrillator pushes electrical current through the heart by means of the electrodes or pads placed on the chest. This brief pulse of current halts the chaotic activity of the heart (ventricular fibrillation), giving it a chance to start beating again with a normal rhythm. Delivering a shock that returns the heart to a normal rhythm is called defibrillation.

UKRC AED signThe sooner you provide defibrillation with an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) or a manual defibrillator, the better the victim's chances of survival. For every minute that a person whose heart is in cardiac arrest must wait to be defibrillated, their chance of survival decreases by about 10 per cent. After 10 minutes, the chance of survival is less than 10 per cent.

Within 3 - 5 minutes the chances of survival are 49 - 75%.

Every minute of delay reduces probability of survival by 10 - 15%

After 10 minutes, the chances of survival are negligible.

Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)  taught by an approved first aid training provider such as First Aid Scotland can buy a little time, but ultimately SCA requires a shock to restore a normal rhythm. This is where the training & use of an AED is vitally important.

Relationship between sudden cardiac arrest survival rate and time to defibrillation

First Aid Scotland are proud to deliver training for Automatic External Defibrillators for use in the workplace. We are distributors and trainers for the Cardiac Science, Laerdal, Medtronic and Defibtech AED devices and consumables. These units can be used;

In adult settings in organisations, factories, offices & workshops

In paediatric setting such as childrens nurseries, playgroups, schools or creches.

N.B : It should be noted that no medical background is required for the safe operation of the Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) on a casualty suffering a sudden cardiac arrest.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

First Aid Scotland is acutely aware of not only the need for AED's in the workplace, but also the cost to organisations of the equipment, and training. Often the cost is the deciding factor in whether a unit is purchased for an organisation. Our aim is to provide as many organisations as possible with the capability & affordability of treating sudden cardiac arrest. We believe that an AED in the workplace should be as essential as a fire extinguisher.

Because of this, discounts are available for AED defibrillator training where AED's are bought from us at discounted prices. Please call for details.

First Aid Scotland offer oxygen therapy through BOC lifeline kits, as an adjunct to Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training. We can supply AED units, and are recognised agents for BOC lifeline oxygen O2 therapy kits to  organisations & companies representatives trained in the use of AED's & oxygen therapy.
